Among the competition in the Best Director category that included Axel Braun, Jonathan Morgan, Michael Raven and Paul Thomas, it was Jules Jordan who made the winner’s acceptance speech. And it was Elegant Angel’s Compulsion that won in the Best Film Category beating out three movies that Vivid offered in competition including: Heart of Darkness, Looking In and Sordid. I certainly agree with everything that you said about Serenity. Just wanted to mention Devinn Lane who has also been an incredible asset to Wicked Pictures. Devinn is always on time, dressed appropriately, and acts professionally. There has never been any hint of any kind of substance abuse on her part, either.

I traveled with Devinn as her roadie on several occasions. Gentlemen’s clubs love her because her stage shows are terrific and because she doesn’t require a babysitter to get to her shows on time. Devinn, also, genuinely appreciates her fans and enjoys spending time with them. As her career has successfully evolved into directing her own line for Wicked and her on series on Playboy TV, Devinn has never acted like a prima donna.

Devon has reportedly contacted someone she knows and tried to persuade him to send three guys here to beat me up or kill me or some such. Well hell she is blonde and probably too dumb to know theres a law against that….

Thing is this keeps dragging on and on because she seems to have some sort of idea that she can use intimidation tactics on me to keep me from saying that apparently her days at Digital Playground are over. I have left out the most damaging stuff because its really more associated with her personal life and I tend to avoid going there. But when someone threatens me with physical violence, well I take that pretty personal, even if it’s an indirect threat, and heres the deal…I actually like Adella and have no desire to cause her any further headaches over Devon, I know DP would love to see all of this fall off the radar, there’s way too much positive stuff going on over there to get mired up in this. Ignore it and maybe it will go away….kinda like Nic Andrews.

I deal with this same thing in mainstream television. Most on air personalities have contracts ( Katie Couric is a “contract girl”), and as with all contracts, they have a limited time. When you sign a contract with a tv station, radio station or porn company, it WILL run out. Then the company has to decide if they want to renew you, or you may decide to move on. Either way, it seems most folks…male and female…seem unable to accept that their job has a limited period.
I’ve had several talents crying their eyes out when they were told their contract would not be renewed. And they seem unwilling to understand that it may not be about them personally, but that the bosses feel they can do better with someone else. Hell CNN sent a bunch of very talented and well-respected people into TV oblivion when they did not renew contracts of the higher paid people. Moreover, it had no reflection on their ability; they just made more money than the company (AOhell) was willing to pay.

So, I would add to your list of advice for performers that your contract is not indefinite, and that you should prepare for the day when it will run out. You can allow it to devastate or “destroy” you, or you can let it be the springboard to new and better opportunity.

Geez I sound like Tony Robbins.

Movies, television, radio and porn all are limited time careers for on camera/on air people. It will end, and preparing to adapt to that will always put you a long way ahead of the game.

Devon Cries Foul:

Apparently Devon is none too pleased with the attention she has gotten here and has encouraged more than one person to contact me asking why I would do this to her, why I would want to “destroy” her. She didn’t call me herself, even though she has the number, she might have even been more successful if she had, I am a bit of a softie. I have buried stories on devon before, far more embarrassing ones than this but I am no longer going to enable her, just like I would expose a company who is doing their contract girls wrong, I am going to expose contract girls who are doing their employers wrong. You see, I have been there. Instead of being embarrassed by what I have written here Devon should be embarrassed that she has caused so much grief and embarrassment for the very people who have tried very hard to help her.

I do find it interesting that when she fucks up and I call her on it, it becomes me “destroying” her. No thought given to her destrpying herself, or even more importantly, those she represents.

I’m going to post a wake up call here, not just for Devon but for all of you contract girls, guys and directors. You would do well to read this, contract or not.

When a company hires you as a contracted employee, they are betting the company on you, you become the “face” of that company. They aren’t just paying you to fuck for them, they are paying you to represent them, 24/7. When people see you, even when you are not at a porn function, these people associate you with the company that you represent. Your company has been generous with you and is presumeably working hard to promote you, so that you in turn, promote your company. When you lack the common courtesy to show up for your scheduled engagements, which are porn functions by the way, how do you think it makes your employers feel? The people who put trust and faith in you and who pay you way better than you would be paid doing anything else in this world. How do you think they feel when they have to LIE for you? Telling people you were on the road dancing, or at home sick when the truth is they don’t know where the fuck you are.

It’s time to take on a little personal responsibility here. How many times have you said “you aren’t the boss of me”? Well it’s time you own up to it when “the boss of you” does fuck up…that’s you in case you are blonde and don’t get it.

I wrote the following three years ago, it still applies and for this article forget that it was aimed at behaviour at industry functions, remember if you are a contract girl you are a representative of your company, whenever you step out of your house you are at an industry function.

OK ladies it’s time for some straight talk with you. The annual Adult Expo and InterneXt Shows are coming up and most of you will be involved in some capacity or another. Some of you will have signing or hosting duties others may just be attending to see and be seen, still others may be brand new and looking to get into the business. No matter which category you fit into your behaviour at these shows reflect directly on you as both a professional and a person, you would do well to heed the following advice. One would think that this would all be common sense but it obviously isn’t.

BE ON TIME! 60% of success in this business is just showing up on time, ready to do your job, whether it is sucking cock or signing autographs you are being paid to do a job and to do it at a particular time. When you are late or unprepared you cost your employer money, and that isn’t cool.

BE PREPARED! That means dressed appropriately and ready with promo materials, sharpies and anything else you might need to get you through the day. If the company that is paying you to sign wants you to dress in specifically designated clothing that is what you do, if you cannot do that don’t accept the job. Your employer has every right to designate what you can wear or will wear in his/her booth while signing.

BE COURTEOUS! If you ever forget that the people coming up to you asking you for your autograph or your picture are the ones who are paying your bills for you then you deserve to starve. Treat your fans respectfully. You are not better than they are, you aren’t doing anything to make the world better. You are a porn star, that in and of itself is not worthy of respect, respect is earned by how you conduct yourself.

BE PROFESSIONAL! This is not a party for you. This is not a time for you to get high. This is not a time for you stay out all night and then drag in late to work the booth the next day reeking of alcohol and looking like something the cats drug up. Remember that what you do is a direct reflection on the person or company who paid your way out there and whose booth you are signing in. If you want to massacre your brain cells that is fine but do it on your own time. Your own time is when you get back into your own house. From the time you step onto that airplane to the time you step off of it to return home you are obligated to whomever is paying your way. Your obligation is to put that person or that company in the most positive light possible. You do not talk bad about them, you do not talk bad about promo material they are having you sign. You do not drink at all on the show floor, every minute of every day you are where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there. Do not pick up your next boyfriend while at the show, Los Angeles is full of out of work musicians who will be more than happy to sponge off of you, you may seek them out when you return home. This is not a pussy hunt or a dick hunt, do your job.

I cannot over emphasize how important it is that you understand that what you do and how you behave, not just on the show floor but throughout the entire day and night is a direct reflection on you and the company you represent. It is standard in this business now days that the contract girls have to have babysitters. People whose job is to keep the girl from getting fucked up, keep her on time for her appearances, keep her from running out and partying. making sure she is dressed appropriately, making sure she doesn’t run off with some guy or girl and making sure she doesn’t say anything embarrassing.

Now just imagine what a girl would be worth if she didn’t have to have a baby sitter. She could always be depended on to be on time, properly attired and pleasant. Nobody had to worry that should would run off on a coke or alcohol binge with some lowlife. Nobody has to cringe when she opens her mouth, praying she doesn’t say anything overtly stupid. Everyone is always confident that she represent her company in the best possible manner. She would be worth a fortune, because she would free up the PR person (read babysitter) to do things that are more important than making sure she doesn’t fuck up.

OK here’s what I know on Devon:

As was noted Digital Playground has made no official announcement on Devon, nor do I have any inside info from Adella. I do have inside info from other sources and I stand by my story. Digital Playground said the reason Devon wasn’t on DPTonight Tuesday was because she had a dancing engagement, presumeably the one Bullheaded wrote about since she was suppossed to start there on Wed, obviously she no showed.

Even if she doesn’t cry her way back into DP she will still get plenty of work, she is a pretty and very photogenic girl, so don’t treat this news like she is gone for good. Devon is notorious for no shows and irresponsible behaviour and I suspect DP just got tired of it.

Ray Charles could have seen that DP hasn’t been promoting Devon very hard of late and who would blame them….

I’m gettin a fair amount of email wanting to know whats next for Devon. That’s anyones guess. Theres speculation that Vivid will snatch her up, I personally do not see that happening. JKP…No Way…Jenna, maybe to spite DP, buzz is Jenna recruited Teagan HARD and lost to DP, but getting DP’s seconds doesn’t sound like a good business plan.

Look for Devon to end up under contract though but most likely with a smaller or a startup company.

But the truth is I have never shot a story driven porn and I kind of doubt that I will. After having worked on some real story driven features that have or will have global distribution I don’t see any point in trying to do a real film for an audience that just wants to jerk off. I am not trying to sound holier than thou I am just being realistic. Porn doesn’t have the budgets to do a decent job with a good story driven feature and almost tnobody in porn has the ability to do it, if they did they wouldn’t be in porn. I have a dozen scripts and treatments registered with the WGA, a couple have been in the works for a couple of years now but things always seem to fall apart at the last minute. That’s cool I am patient.

Rob Black and Tom Zupko make pretty rough, gross porn, with depictions of rape, violence, blood, and bizarre symbolism. Paul Thomas is the quintessential Vivid director - pretty couples’ porn. Justin Sterling is Jenna’s husband, and since Jenna is the mainstream face of porn, I guess Pete is lumping PT and Justin together, even though Sterling is as fond of disgusting symbolism as Zupko, although Zupko is patently insane and Sterling is a
thoroughly decent guy. Pete is making the point that in his view, Ashcroft makes no distinction between mainstream adult entertainment and the weirder, riskier stuff, and that he’d like to get rid of both. I suppose he probably would, but he doesn’t seem much inclined to prosecute either, and I don’t really see any evidence for Pete’s assertion. I find it interesting, though - there is at least a suggestion that as far as Pete is concerned, it would be OK with him
to prosecute Black/Zupko stuff, or to treat different pieces of legal porn differently, based on their content - an idea far more dangerous to the First Amendment than anything John Ashcroft or George Bush has ever done.

I have absolutely no idea, by the way, why Mike South is in this list. Mike South is like me - a totally insufferable, opinionated know-it-all. Unlike me, who has only six-seven years of experience in porn that ended five years back, Mike has twenty-plus years (I think) of success in the porn biz to back him up. In my opinion, Mike South has always had one of the best eyes for new talent in the biz - he finds tons of flat-out sexy new girls. (I always used to keep a weather eye out for South at CES and other porn public events in order to see the new eye candy on his arm!) But as a director, he’s never been anything more than a point-and-shoot worn-out hack. To his credit, he doesn’t pretend to be a great director, and has always marketed his stuff as amateur or gonzo, without any pretensions to more. I’d call his work solidly mainstream, but unlike Black, Zupko, and Thomas, each of whom calls a definite style
to mind, Mike South doesn’t HAVE a style - as a director. He has quite a provocative and interesting style as a writer and commentator on adult entertainment. I also think he’s a very competent producer and a very good marketer. Mike has a reputation in the biz as being somewhat unlikeable, but he also has a reputation as an honest and solid pro who is both good and easy to do business with.

Anyway, I hope that clarifies what Pete meant by referring to these directors - well, at least what I thought he meant. If he meant something else, he’s the guy to believe.
